    Andrew Neil's Hayek lecture

If any of you read the Sunday business, you may have read this superb piece by Andrew Neil. It is long so I will just paste the link. For all of you guilty left leaning hypocrites who support statism may be interested that thanks to capitalism China's poor (poverty defined by people receiving less than a dollar a day) has dropped from 67% of the population to 17%. No state controlled or state dominated society has ever improved the plight of the poor.

Can we have a dumbed down set of sound bites as a summary for the New Lie generation?

the Guardian (paper edition) today pointed out that what has done this is capitalism plus protectionism: countries that have been forced to accept G8/IMF medicine have simply been shafted. It is not for nothing that the United Staes of America sheltered its own growing capitalism (mostly from the power of the Empire) with tariffs of up to 40%; and now their mature capitalist economy is the most powerful in the world. Shame they won't stand for anyone else nurturing their infant capitalism in the same way.

This is mainly due to corruption in these countries that resulted in G8/IMF loans stolen and as the consequence people of those countries got shafted - the main issue with G8/IMF is that they turn blind eye on blatant corruption at the highest levels of executive.

What's good in it? The Govts of the world depend on money moved around - the amount of tax taken at each transaction is staggeting so as long as money flow around Govts benefit.

They are STUCK IN BANK - not actually spend on buying presents for Xmas and thus taxed taxed taxed: Govts of the world dread having people to save money - money saved in the bank is the worst nightmare of GBrowns of this world.

Thus, Govts win nothing to have money they load end up in SWISS banks - perhaps Switzerland (sp?) gains something they would not have had, but other than that its a total waste of dosh.

I am not talking about them - I am talking about G7/IMF allowing lots of money to be taken out of circulation - african dictators steal them and keep in bank account, thus avoiding paying lots of taxes that would have been paid had the same amounts be paid to millions of people.

IMO - there should not be such a thing as giving money to Africa - only actual products clearly marked in such a way that to prevent their resale. Any Govt that wishes to receive help should make cuts in their military programs.

Actually it's more the other way round: corruption will ruin any plan but total liberalism/globalism doesn't need it, it will ruin a fledgling economy all by itself.

Relative absence of corruption is indeed a requisite for protectionism to work: it only works if it's there to protect the real economy while it's developing, not if it's only there to protect the President-for-life's family.

The loans are not the point at all: give them loans, especially on IMF terms, and they stay poor. Give them breathing space to replace imports with local goods, and they develop.
