    Venice accommodation

I know it's expensive and I know easter isn't the best time to go but it's the only time possible due to gf chef being a teacher. So, does anyone have any good hotel recommendations for Venice?

Plan is to take the overnight sleeper train from Munich to Venice and then spend 4 days there before getting the day train back.

Venice in early spring is supposed to be very nice. Lots of mist and atmosphere, and cooler and more comfortable than later in the season. MrsB and I are planning on going back for a long weekend at some point this year and Easter is an option.

You basically have two choices, spend more and stay in the city proper or pay less and stay on the Lido. Unless you plan on being in the hotel a lot I wouldn't go out of your way to splash out on one, it's going to cost you enough as it is. By and large the hotels are all much of a muchness, Venice is one huge tourist trap designed to seperate vistors from their cash. So unless you are up to staying at the Cipriani I'd pick one thats a reasonable cost and go for that.

We stayed here when I popped the question to Mrs GJ:

      Gabrielli Sandwirth

It's full of old world charm and only a short walk to St Marco, the vaporreto is just outside too.

Was good about 20 years ago. Of course it might have changed since then....

Look at the Cipriani. Used it a few times but never stayed. Not for the faint of budget though.

I've tended to use these sites when looking for somewhere, some of the guest houses outstrip the hotels...

I know you like your food chef and would recommend you check out this gem for early evening snacks and glass of something. It's called Gia Schiavi and is near Accademia bridge.

            Bellissimo!

Here is the top tip about Venice, don't stay there !!

Stay in Treviso about 15Km North on the mainline. Cheap Trains go from here regularly into Venice from 6 am until Midnight. Venice is dead at night and still expensive.

Treviso is charming place, great resturants and swanky wine bars, for next to c*ck all. I went last year for 5 nights, would go again tommorrow. I travel in Italy alot and this was one of the best places I've been. It's almost tourist free so you're not getting ripped off. 2E for a spritz and you can get a 3 course meal in a humble trattoria for around 25E including a litre of wine.

Google it, it's even got a Titian in it's dumo , also good for a day to Padova and Giotto's painted chapel.

You've obviously not brought in the new year in Venice...

Nope not new year, but then again stowmarket is busy on new year.

Went last year in June, was planning night in Venice but it was dead after the daytrippers had left, went back to Treviso and it was kicking.
