              "early retirement" - it depends how early.
              war chest - the purpose of one of these is to remove all fear of the bench, so that you don't have to take scrappy contracts to make ends meet, but can pick and choose what you do, how you do it, and how much you charge. £100k should be ample unless you've got a string of bulimic polo ponies or something.
