    Walking off the contract..

Has anyone had any experience of throwing the towel in?

    What are the implications?

I have been on this project for 2 weeks and its a disaster. All i can see currently is disaster and for the forseeable future even more disaster.

I am working with two guys who have sat in an office together and laughed out loud about how they think the project is tulip and how they dont like it.

I have sat in these meetings with a straight face, thinking to myself, OH MY GOD. Im working with a bunch of cowboys.

My role is to face the users, the employees, embed the technology into the corporate culture, and promote usage of it. I have to beleive in the technologies capabilities for it to be a success.

All around me i see dark clouds.

If i walk, do i have to write this job off. i.e not reference in on my CV?

What will it look like to other agencies/companies when asked what i was doing?

Many of them will probably think they don't want you to work through them, if you want to the hard truth. Having done it once you are likely to do it again.

So is it not up to you to get the delivery side sorted so that you can properly represent it to the users? If it's too difficult, why take it on in the first place?
Anyway, to be a bit more practical, it's all about what's in the contract. If you can leave in accordance with its terms, or sub it to some other mug, then do so and nobody will bat an eyelid. After that it's down to negotiation with the client. Walking away and pretending it never happened is what civil servants do, not professional contractors.
      Blog? What blog...?

        I have walked once.

        Two reasons.

The place was BT Indian Outsource tulipsville and the interviewers lied like **** about the place. Within 1Hr at the place I thought "oh my fcuking god, what have I done!".

Secondly I got offered a very juicy contract 2 days after starting the first. On the third day I quit.

The agency went berserk and threatened to sue me. I told them to go ahead. I hadn't actually signed the contract, although by turning up I had in effect accepted it.

Anyway, a week later, the agency rang me up and said.

"Did you find another contract, we've got one we think you might like".

Maybe I wasn't the 1st contractor at that place to just walk!

          How long is your contract?

If it's three months then you may as well grin and bear things until you can walk away and get another contract in the new financial year.

If it's six months or more and you're certain it's a Death March From Hell, then I'd serve notice and walk. Who knows, if you're professional enough and tell them your reasons they may decide to change things and keep you on in a new capacity.

If i walk, do i have to write this job off. i.e not reference in on my CV?
It's only two weeks so write it off.

            Walk, fuk em

I was about to walk from this current contract, the non payment issue, oh we made a mistake, really...

here is how it is going to be...

Wed: I go on call Friday 5:30pm for 7 days, if funds are not in my account by close of business 5:30pm Friday, I'm gone... shove it up your jacksy

You the agent can explain to the end client why a contractor has walked off site leaving one of the biggest outsourcing companies within the UK without a cover...

Funny enough they got it sorted!

Swamps right. Although I'd serve notice even on a 3 monther. An the CV never needs to know.

                Hold on ...

The point of getting in a contractor is because you need specialist skills or someone with the where-with-all and knowledge to make a sinking ship float again.

If you aren't up to these aspects of the job you really shouldn't be outside the safe world of permiedom.

                  i see..

                  its a 6monther.

my initial thought is to stick it out for 3months, then re-assess.

i agree, this is a sinking ship, and i want to do all i can to get it back up and running. however, there is a general feeling of uncertainty on the project and the manager could well, turn at any point, so its natural for me to look at potential backup plans

well, i can see from the threads, walking is not a well supported decision.

basically, the contract states along with my interview to come onto the project and start promoting and populating the system.

since i have started, the guys implementing it have had problem after problem. it still is not ready for launch, therefore making my job using it very difficult.

the only reason im thinking of walking is that i have been offfered another 6month starting asap, by another agent.
