    Invoicing day

    12,500 euros

For those of use who aren’t benched, it’s the best day of the month again. For those who are benched, take heart from the fact that you will some day once again feel the pleasure of looking at your MS Calculator and seeing a number with 5 figures, then putting the invoice in the post.

    Don't forget your timesheets

Anything I’m paid enough to test.

I often see monthly incomes with 5 figures, problem is, two usually have a dot before them.

From this can we infer that SKA isn't tested to Mich's high standards.....

Nice one Mich. It's been a while since I've seen levels like that.

Basically if you want a good rate as a tester/test manager then you need to test the systems that are absolutely top priority critical stuff for the organization concerned, and get a track record on your cv where it’s obvious that the systems you’ve worked on are ‘critical, must work properly or tulip hits fan’ systems. You do that by being selective about clients and projects during the boom years. During the boom years when I could pick and choose clientcos I always asked at the end of the interview how high the priority of the project is for senior management and whether the system is critical for the business, critical for safety or has high public/media exposure. If it wasn’t critical I turned them down; I don’t test peripheral systems, but systems which absolutely have to work for the sake of the business concerned. If you test peripheral stuff like GUI changes in some boring HR system or automated birthday list then you’ll probably not get the best rates and you’ll not have anything impressive to put on your CV, so when the market goes down you’ll be fighting for the tulipty rates at some provincial tax office. See it as a kind of ‘functional arrogance’.

So yes, if the chance came along, I'd love to test nuclear reactors.

I suppose it would be "nuclear reactor control systems" that you would test rather than the reactor itself - that and aircraft / air traffic control would be the scariest things to sign off & put your name to - has anyone on this board ever worked on such systems - if so what was your level of PI cover required ?
