I have bored myself tulipless by trying to pick a needle from a haystack (ie Google)

[and is sorely disappointed as it sinks beneath "Should we bomb Iran?", "I'm bored" threads and dumbass responses..]

You might be better off asking in Technical, they''l treat your question seriously over there...

you could do worse than go and find Computer Shopper and read the advice it gives.

            Well (Workwise).............
Office (Word/Excel/PPT etc - probably won't use Access)
            Web - Wireless (& wire?)
(Sometimes) Connect to ClientCo Network (Wire)

(Sitting in Hotel Room sad lonely and friendless)
            Web
            DVD

Fairly small & light..... but not major issue

            You know "just" a Laptop........
Don't want tat.... Don't want Goldplated....

Its always Sony/Toshiba who are the best in my experience. Stick to them and you can't go wrong. Search for offers on DABS and then google the model name for reviews. That way you will get a quality reliable laptop.

Just about every laptop has wired and wireless these days and web access should be fine with most machines - avoid the cheaper / slower processors like Intel Atom.

To run office make sure it has a fast dual core processor and plenty of memory. Avoid Vista.

For DVDs if you can afford it get a BluRay player built in.

Best to read some reviews in Computer Shopper or similar magazines, look for something that is going to be reliable and it you are travelling a lot either get a long life battery or a spare battery.

John Lewis have been doing decent prices and a 2nd year free warranty - I don't know if they still do it.

Get two, one 10” light weight go anywhere and one 15” for serious work. Install VMWare on the 15” so that you can run a client build XP and a leisure build version XP off the same laptop (for security reasons). You can also run some servers if you need to for software testing or similar. The advantage with VMW is that you keep copies of you OS in case you need to scrub the ones you are using.

3-4 GB ram is important as well as being rugged. Look for week parts such a catches etc. A 15” will take some pounding when being lugged around.
