I've been working on a crossword for the past few days, and I've ground to a halt. Any hints gratefully received...

In the following clues, the letter O, S or I may be in the wordplay, but won't be entered into the grid.

Economical magazine young man's left inside. (4) P???
Ruin tip of plant that's placed in the ground (5)
Frightened, losing head, having consumed drug after a bit of skunk grass (7,two words) S??????
Strings up southern woman (4) ???S
Insect's head found in cut old plum (6) ???INE
No heart for carnal beast (4) ???L

That looks like a job for TEA, The Electronic Alveary. I hear crossword people think it is really helpful, I use it for other purposes so can't say.

I've got TEA, and it is excellent. I think it was written by one of the Times compilers. I've also tried www.onelook.com which has a reverse dictionary as well as letter matching. But I just can't get anywhere.

        insects head = IN
        old plum = prune
        found = base
cut = cut and jumble prune

I don't do crosswords, but isn't that considered cheating?

It's PULP (as in Pulp fiction)
PUP = young man, with an L inside

Economical magazine young man's left inside. (4) Porn

An economy version of something is a cheaper or smaller version. A smaller version of magazine is 'Mag'.

Another term for a young man is a 'Lad' so a young man's could be a 'lad's'

Mag Lad's "left inside" moves the left word to the inside of the sentance becoming "Lad's Mag"

A Lads Mag is a euphamism for a pornographic magazine.

An "Economical" version of "pornographic magazine" becomes Porn.
