    RAV4 Woes

Can't select reverse, 1st or 2nd gears (i.e. anything that requires a shift over to the left). Happened all of a sudden yesterday afternoon.

Any mechanically minded folks out there? Please tell me I haven't got a knackered gearbox. Car's only got 16k on the clock!

Hope you've got warranty, I think you're gonna need it...

Yeah, got a warranty; just hope it's worth the paper it's written on!

Could be gear linkage rather than the gearbox itself - this is a much less severe problem as I understand it.

Disclaimer: I know very little about cars!

The fact that it was sudden makes me think it's linkages/cables instead of the gearbox itself. So should be a reasonable repair. Might even be roadside repairable by RAC etc

Sounds like the 'dog' selectors in the gearbox have gone. Big bill if your warranty isnt with a main dealer otherwise you'll be ok.

Are you on the toyota recall list from last month?

No, not as far as I know

Depends if it's a remote linkage or direct into the box. For a RAV I guess it's the former. Last time I saw this (on a Ford of some description), a loose bolt in the UJ at the base of the lever was jamming against the housing.

To lose three gears in the same plane is pretty unlikely to be the gearbox itself.
