    Contracting in the deep South

    Ol' man river,
    Dat ol' man river
    He mus'know sumpin'
    But don't say nuthin',
    He jes'keeps rollin'
    He keeps on rollin' along.

    He don' plant taters,
    He don't plant cotton,
    An' dem dat plants'em
    is soon forgotten,
    But ol'man river,
    He jes keeps rollin'along.

You an'me, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin' an' racket wid pain,
    Tote dat barge!
    Lif' dat bale!
    Git a little drunk
    An' you land in jail.

    Ah gits weary
    An' sick of tryin'
    Ah'm tired of livin'
    An' skeered of dyin',
    But ol' man river,
    He jes'keeps rolling' along.

Colored folks work on de Mississippi,
Colored folks work while de white folks play,
Pullin' dose boats from de dawn to sunset,
Gittin' no rest till de judgement day.

    Don't look up
    An' don't look down,
    You don' dast make
    De white boss frown.
    Bend your knees
    An'bow your head,
    An' pull date rope
    Until you' dead.)

Let me go 'way from the Mississippi,
    Let me go 'way from de white man boss;
Show me dat stream called de river Jordan,
Dat's de ol' stream dat I long to cross.

    O' man river,
    Dat ol' man river,
    He mus'know sumpin'
    But don't say nuthin'
    He jes' keeps rollin'
    He keeps on rollin' along.

Long ol' river forever keeps rollin' on...

    He don' plant tater,
    He don' plant cotton,
    An' dem dat plants 'em
    Is soon forgotten,
    but ol' man river,
    He jes' keeps rollin' along.

Long ol' river keeps hearing dat song.
You an' me, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin an' racked wid pain.
    Tote dat barge!
    Lif' dat bale!
    Git a little drunk
    An' you land in jail.

    Ah, gits weary
    An' sick of tryin'
    Ah'm tired of livin'
    An' skeered of dyin',
    But ol' man river,
    He jes'keeps rollin' along!

Reminds me of a week or two ago when I was listening to a senior military bod (General Mike Jackson I think) on R4. At one point he referred to something being "the nigger in the woodpile". I had no idea what was meant and was taken aback at the use of such an expression on R4.

ah, yes, the richness of the English language is being destroyed by political correctness.

For those of you who dont recognise gen Jacksons phrase, the current rendition is

'An ethnically different male of darker pigmentation who is prone to bunking off and hiding where he is least likely to be caught. Usually amongst the debris of (undoubtably),illegally harvested bio-assets'

Hasn't Mike Jackson been white for a few years now?

          Maybe I have missed something

Oh and he's not even a general. Maybe that's what he told you, though. Were you 14 at the time and was he keen to get you to jump into his "general" bed?
          Chico, what time is it?

              Beccy

It is difficult to believe that someone as bright and as pert as yourself is confused by the identity of Mr Jackson. No, I bet this is some jolly jape where you are deliberately misidentifying the man. Oh my, that is terribly funny - why not go further and make reference to his brother Peter Jackson and his large monkey friend ?

It was Major General Patrick Cordingley, who commanded the 7th Armoured Brigade during the 1991 Gulf war. Incidentally, he also opposed the invasion of Iraq so I guess he's yet another liberal, tree-hugging, bed-wetting terrorist appeaser with a hidden agenda who know nothing about the practicalities of modern warfare.
