Those who can, don't get as much money as those who can't.

Industry based on physics alone (never mind any other sciences) contributes about 6.4% of UK GDP, about the same as the financial services sector.

The bank bailout cost 850 billion pounds - more than Britain's science budget for all sciences for all of history.

We are poor because we are stupid.

You do know that all those fancy financial instruments that supposedly got the banks into trouble were designed by guys with physics PhD's.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

It is true that British society collectively is now more stupid than it has been for a few centuries. This is reflected in popular culture, the deification of celebrities, crass materialism, living off the past leading to a sense of entitlement and unjustified superiority, a lack of economic common sense both collectively and personally ...

            The list is endless.
However a society gets what its deserves.

What industries are solely based on physics? Just asking like.

Airport scanners, X-ray machines, MRI machines, ultrasound. And lots of other scanning technologies - bridge structural scanning, scanning the contents of a bottle to detect if it's not what it should be (I worked with a company doing this).

Anything to do with aerodynamics (ok engineering cross-over here).

                  Etc.

All industries are based on physics as ultimately everyone and everything obeys the laws of physics (maybe apart from threaded).
