    Deutsche Bahn 'nears Arriva deal'

erman national rail company Deutsche Bahn is close to sealing a £1.6bn takeover of UK transport group Arriva, according to reports.

Deutsche Bahn confirmed last month that it had tabled a bid for Sunderland-based Arriva.

Now it has been reported that its board is meeting this week to approve the bid with an announcement expected in the next couple of weeks.

Arriva declined to comment. Nobody from Deutsche Bahn could be reached.

When will they stop selling vital service oriented companies to foreign companies ? Expect bus tickets to cost double just as it has happened with the power companies.

This would never have happened under the Tories

On the other hand maybe a bit of German efficiency is exactly what is needed?

Has it happened with the power companies ? Where is the proof that this takeover is not for the sole purpose of making enormous profits but to make the company efficient and serve the population properly ?

We are all in business to make money... part of an effecient business model is customer satisfaction and thus low customer churn. British business is very poor at customer satisfaction, german's tend to be better, if not great. So maybe it will work out for the best. Can't have a go at them for making money tho' ....

Rubbish. The local transport group here is French owned and all they do is raise fares and reduce service. Northern Rail is Dutch(?) owned all they do is get massive subsidies. I've seen no proof that foreign owned companies are better than locally owned ones.
