What would you do with £97 billion?

The thought of all this public money being spent on nukes makes me feel

Just imagine what could be done with that money, unbenching everyone on here for starters!

I'd spend it on tanks, warships, helicopters and fighter planes.

If it keeps nuclear expertise up to scratch in this country it's worth every penny. (Not saying it necessarily does though, if the kit is simpy bought from the Yanks.)

But not having most of our electricity produced by UK-based nuclear power stations in a few years' time will be a heck of a lot more expensive and disastrous to the environment longer term. This is something Grenpeace and the like can never understand, and one of Labour's biggest failures over the last few years.

There is one little corner of expertise, but it's hanging by it's nails while the government decides to build the power-stations.

If the next government doesn't pull it's finger out that corner will disappear and we'll be completely swamped by the French...

I'd spend it on developing little suitcase nukes in secret, planting them in the major cities of the world, and then blackmail the nations into turning their sovereignty over to me. While stroking my white cat of course.

And now is the time to do it, while James Bond is out of action

Nuclear power I am fine with that. But nuclear weapons are a complete waste of money particularly when we can’t use them independently. IE: The UK must ask permission from the US to use them.

We ought to use them. At least we would get our money's worth.

In reality the fallout from even a smallish nuclear exchange would probably do for a number of citizens of the winning country even if the losers never managed to launch any.
