Post of the day. Especially like the footnote that it is atmospheric pressure that starts it off, but the pressures soon equalize.

I think atmospheric pressure does more than start it off - You need atmospheric pressure to prevent the a portion of fluid from the highest point of the siphon simply parting from the rest and falling out.

I doubt if van der Waals forces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_der_Waals_force) are enough to hold the fluid together.

So the pedant may be wrong, or not entirely correct, himself. :rolleyes:

(or maybe I'm wrong)

edit: Oops - As this is a thread about pedants I felt obliged to add a comma after the word "correct" :emb
