It was OK for the cameras to be there to spy on anti-social behaviour....but not terrorism..

Isn't terrorism also anti-social or am I missing something?

      quite,

a friend of mine in the smoke got a parking ticket because his car was seen by the camera on double yellows while he went to a cash machine or some such

      and that's deemed acceptable

      yet, the other is not

If a large group of people go on the rampage together surely that's social behaviour?

the CCTV system there included hidden cameras, there was also a ring of ANPR cameras around the area which recorded every single car entering and leaving.

That level of surveilance of an entire population is a rather large step in the wrong direction

London is completely ringed with ANPR cameras so why not one neighbourhood of the second largest city? I know feck all about policing but I do know that terrorism is not going to be defeated by a poster campaign.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson
