    Contract in Finland

Hi All - Apologies if this has already been discussed... An interesting opportunity has come up for me to potentially work in Finland for a 6 month contract. I was hoping to draw on some of your experiences.
I am particularly interested in the cost of living in general and particularly accommodation as well as any quirky tax rules I might come up against? I'm not intending to stay there beyond 6 months unless of course someone is going to tell me i'd be better off doing that Anyone who's been there done it or even doing it now !

Any insight would be much appreciated!

It is worth finding out where you will be based, because this may add up to your travel costs. Any office based in the capital area (Helsinki - Espoo - Vantaa) can be easily reached from the airport within 30 min. If you will be somewhere further, you might need a whole day to travel there from UK, so just be aware of that.

Helsinki is a nice and international city where there is a lot to do, but it can be pretty expensive too.

Have you found any companies that offer payroll solutions for Finland? I do not know about any quirky tax rules, but the taxes are quite high there. For that reason you should be asking for a higher rate that you might ask for example in Germany or France.

If you find yourself in a sauna situation with the boss there's no shame in politely making your excuses and leaving if you think it's getting a little hotter than you're used to.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Great place to live and work, but the cost of living is scary. Paying UK tax for up to 6 months, which is legit (or at least I hope it is) makes it more affordable.

Renting accommodation through the housing company called Forenom is not cheap, but it's quite easy (although friendly customer service is not one of their strengths).

And if you're thinking of staying longer than 6 months, I can't help. I'm still trying to figure out how to do that myself.

Forenom are the equivalent of what a German might call an 'Affentheater'.. avoid avoid avoid.

Finland is also well north, and dark for most of the day in the wintertime.

Conversely Finnish chicks are hot, so I've been told

                  Booze in particular.

Could be a fun experience but if you are just after the money you'll need a very good rate to achieve that.
