Where to settle down along the M3/M4 corridor?

At this moment, things in Belgium look pretty bleak. Even the French
socialists are now openly talking about separation, so I think it's time
to pack up bags and leave.

My in-laws live in Somerset, so ideally I'd like to settle down
somewhere along the M3/M4 corridor. That place should ideally tick
    the following boxes:

    -good quality of life
    -family houses around 250K
    -plenty of IT jobs
    -easy commute, no traffic jams

    Any ideas? Bristol? Swindon? Bath?

Any one living in the West Country?

You could do a lot worse than Swindon. Good transport links to London, Wales, south coast and midlands. £250k would get you a 3 bed detached in a decent area of town or 4 bed in the expansion to north and west of swindon.

A comute to central London from Bath, Bristol?

You make as well live in Edinburgh, takes about the same time door to door.

Actually jesting aside. The last time I was working in London I was commuting weekends back home to Edinburgh. 9 out of 10 times I made the office desk on a Monday morning before this chap from Hampshire despite leaving later than him!!

Yes Bath is a nice spot as is Winchester and the like but even these days I feel they are becoming overcrowded.

I live in Winchester - it's very nice and you'll get a 3 bed/1 bath semi for around 300K. It's not as nice as it was 10 years ago but it's still pleasant. 1 hour fast train into Waterloo.

How much do you pay for the return train ticket from Bath to Paddington during rush hour?

We stopped spending money needlessly a while back

                  Oh £154 for a 90 minute journey

I took train from Berlin to Hamburg, 65 euros for a 90 minute journey or 110 1st class!

Ridiculous I agree, he could always drive.

Not so long ago I flew from Bristol to Edinburgh on one of BA's small regional jets (Embraer 145?), I had a single leather exec seat and free refreshments. £50 return.
