    From Tat to Vino!

I was in the process of buying a freehold last year which contained a Wine Rack. At the time I thought it was a good investment (they'll never go bust). Little did I know.

Luckily they went into administration just as I made the offer, so I pulled out.

Anyway, Wine Rack only managed to get rid of a few profitable stores to independent chains, the one I was going to buy was one. I think they've done a terrible job with the refit and reckon when the break comes up next year they'll take it. So as an investment there is no guarantee they will renew and if they do I reckon they'll want a serious reduction in rent.

So as I am jacking in the world of Tat in the New Year I am toying with moving into the world of Wine!

I spend at least £1500 per year on wine & beer. £1100 on Wine, £400 on beer.

I'm interested in a straw poll of the amount of cash CUKKERs spend on beer and wine and how much you spend on specialist wine, champers, spirits, cigars and alcohol related gifts products as I try and work out a model for a premium establishment.

I was about to reply that I spend less that a score a week on booze these days because I've been seriously poorly and have to restrict my use of the stuff. However, that works out to 1000 pa. That is two thirds of what you spend.

So what makes you think that you've got the experience of booze that would make you a good retailer?
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

      1) My background. First 5 years of my career was as a Retail/Supply Chain Consultant specialising in Category Management analytics & planogramming software design.

I was the account manager for Forbouys, Gallahers & Duty Free, Tescos, Jim Beam, Boots, 7-Eleven & Britvic among others and was on a retainer to a few of those as a business modeller.

      2) I have owned retail shops since 2003

      3) I am a piss head.

How can you call yourself a piss head when you spend hardly any more than me and I'm on a restricted intake.

        Edit:

I should add that your other qualifications are valid. I'm just refering to the point I make above.

So do I. It's my heart and other bits that are faulty with me.

For years I've had to have regular medicals done (part of having work permits abroad). Everytime I went to a new doctor they ask about my drinking and have a moan. When they get the results back and find my liver function is fine they always are surprised. One nutter I used to have when I was living in the west end was visibly disappointed when he get the results.

Still modelling it. FYI. If ever you want to find out turnovers, margins, sq footage, net profits etc etc, use Daltons.com. It is an invaluable site for getting your hands of on 1000s of businesses for sale and then being able to model it.

Probably buy about 30 quid worth of cigars a week, 40 quid of wine (4 bottles) and about 10 quid of beer.

Booze shops are dead now, oddbins are the only ones left round these parts and I know they are going to close soon.

Bargain booze is going to die. There will be no margin and no way to compete with supermarkets.

Specialist & Premium will be the natural diversification for an independent retailer.
