      Are you doing any cacheing at application level? If so, Raymond Chen has a good post about some ways that caches can bite back.

          We got 72 GB in those, maxed out for all practical purposes (18 x 4 GB memory chips, 8 GBs are not priced reasonably...)

          NickFitz: some caches, but most is used for random access to do certain SKA calculations...
