    cure for cancer

Every once in a while there will be a headline in a national newspaper stating something along the lines of a breakthrough having been made in the fight against cancer.

Today's Telegraph surpassed all with a headline claiming that we are now in the endgame . One thing these stories have in common is that one never hears anything of them ever again. Indeed, I just went to the Telegraph site and there was not a trace of what was their leading story a few hours ago.

I have a horrible feeling that these stories amount to no more than press releases from pharmaceutical companies cynically designed to boost their share prices. How the hell they become headline news is beyond me but I feel angry for those with cancer who must grasp at things like this as a ray of hope. Presumably only to be cruelly let down.

Well, if it disappeared so quickly before markets open in UK then it's hardly a good share price boosting scheme...

One more thought - better investment into firms that try to find cure from cancer than say investment into all sort of junk like spread betting, casino's from the City etc.

The cynical among us would say that the pharmas are supressing the cure to boost sales of other drugs that treat the symptoms that are far more lucrative.

Any company that will have patent on proper cure or even vaccine from cancer would make many many billions of dollars, the supression of such "cure" is not an option, however lack of investment into trying to get it for sure is - it's a very hard problem to solve and current taxation and market forces do not reward such long term investments, frankly given massive spend of NHS on this problem they could have dedicated some of that money to their own R&D.

Yes but these appear to be 2 separate developments; the first using injections of immune cells and the second using drugs to block the effects of a specific mutation. I thought you were suggesting some continuity.
