    Forcing "scroungers" to take work

Can some of the rabid r-ght-wing growlers here explain how this can work? Given 3 important points:

    1) Any job that gets advertised normally gets 100+ applicants anyway, from people able and willing to do the job.

    2) Any company worth its salt would prefer one of those 100 (or import a young good looking Pole if its Starbucks or Pret-a-Manger) to all the problems that would come with Johnny Chav

    3) Monitoring and co-ercing Johhny into applying for jobs he's got no interest in doing, will cost Govt money. At a time when Govt cuts are needed.

I can see only one of 2 outcomes i) A lot of paperwork/bureaucracy added, to no outcome OR ii) some Johnny's really do have their bennies stopped, and they resort to crime to get by (and yes we know some of them already do this).

Yes, but what happens to the people who currently clean the streets when the local councils figure out they can use slave labour instead?

Round here the road sweepers are quite efficient. Want to put them out of work? Great - punish the decent and replace them with skivers who will do a tulip job.

If you're talking about extra employment, how does that fit in with cutting government spending (remember you'll have to have a large number of supervisors, admin staff to make sure Johnny's attendance record is acceptable)

        Fail.

How is it slave labour? They should be paid minimum wage to do that job - at least 20 hours per week.

The contract with larger scale rubbish removal will probably stay the same, it's the small bits of rubbish that are not economical to hire expensive PPP tulip that they got these days to deal with garbage.

Ok, rubbish is one thing - get them to learn how to trim stuff, plant things ffs - lots of jobs can be created, and if they don't like those then they can go find proper job.

Basic flaw here. Creating jobs is something the current Government is not going to do (perhaps rightly) - they're going to be created (if at all) by the private sector. Given that the private sector has a surfeit of applicants (UK people, EE people, Bob) who are keen to do the work and (sometimes) good at the job, why on Earth would they be interested in Johhny Chav, who's forced to go to the interview by the Job Centre?

                • Sorting rubbish/recycling into recyclable stuff
                • Cleaning graffiti (this is a self replenishing source of work)
                • The kind of stuff they make them do for community service
                • Picking up litter - (how much of this would need to be constantly done to get our streets up to the levels of skandinavian countries?)
                • Construction/renovation work on some of this government property Philip Green is saying should be sold off - get it developed into something useful maybe?

I'm sure there's plenty of useful work that needs doing that Johnny can be made to do for his giro. Hopefully if it's arduous and tedious enough and he's got to get up and do it anyway he might decide that his time would be better spent trying to get a better "job"

WHS - if they can find work for prisoners to do they can put Johnny to work as well.

You're missing a pertinent point. There are no jobs, even for some talented, diligent folk out there who are looking for a job. No company in the market-place is going to set on someone with no work record and few skills who clearly has no intention of working.
Also - "creating" the jobs you list won't happen. The Government won't do this as it rightly knows it takes a lot of supervision and bureaucracy, and hence money.
