    what to do?

client has asked for me to work on a saturday in november for a development release, dictated by their client. Problem is it's 6 weeks away and the exact weekend gf chef has booked a romatic hotel weekend away as my b'day present. work project related politics are tense, I'm not looking for an extension, in fact the opposite as I want to study German, however, the PM holds weight in terms of future work in a niche market in this country, i.e I say No, will not go down well and possibly burn bridges for future work in a small world specialist market. I say yes, i have to deal with gf chef and fully paid for weekend away as a birthday present not being taken, moving the weekend date is not an option until next year.

Work the weekend and ask your brother to fill in on the romantic weekend?

Seriously, working may contribute more to yours and GF chef's future. Ask her if she can rearrange it.

Please note that I am not at all romantic, and not very sentimental.

No brainer for me. If she can't see the bigger picture then you/she have other issues.

        I'd work the weekend.

          WHS.
Besides, once you get to your age, Birthdays are no biggy anyway.

Hard to judge without knowing more about g/f (and no I'm not going down the usual route of "post us a pic" etc). I'd take the romantic weekend though.

1.Shows what you value most (if true)
2.Whenever I try to judge/call politics/niceh markets opportunities etc, I find all the rules have changed (again); mostly the things I worry about most never happen and the stuff I was sure about evaporates.
3.I don't wish to work for anyone so unreasonable they think they need a particular weekend of mine at shortish notice more than I do

6 weeks is not short notice for contract resource. I'll have people working this coming weekend and which resource that will be will depend on tomorrow's progress. Them's the rules and they are made clear to any potential new joiner.
