Referees' Strike - for those interested!

BBC Sport - Celtic v refs controversy

As it happens, the Referee initially claimed that the linesman changed his mind for him. However, as any football fan will know, if a linesman wants to alert the ref of something, he holds his flag aloft to attract the ref's attention. Just watch the linesman here, he immediately goes behind the goal having presumably accepted the ref's initial call.
The referee then changed his mind and revoked his decision. Almost unprecedented eh? What is worse, the Ref seemed quite happy to peddle the myth that this change of heart was down to the linesman's intervention.
The Celtic manager requested clarification of the decision. It should not be forgotten that Dougie McDonald didn’t lie just to the Celtic manager– he lied to the official SFA refereeing observer, encouraged other officials to do the same, and in turn confirmed the lie to Lennon following an official request for clarification made through the official SPL delegate.
The linesman involved subsequently resigned. This action was initially reported as being down to intimidation and threats made by fans. He then went on record as saying that his decision was as a result solely of bullying and threats made within the Refereeing community, and NOT due to supporters' threats.
The Head of Referee development he labelled a "Bully", that man is Hugh Dallas. Dallas initially supported the Dougie McDonald story, but later went cool on the idea when the facts began to unravel. Dallas is himself currently being internally investigated for recently sending a sectarian mail from his work email account.
This has largely been portrayed as simply Celtic whipping up a campaign for their own ends. However it is anything but.
See below the comments from the Dundee United Manager from the same match.

    The Courier - SFA

Celtic are highlighting no more than a call for reasoned accountability. Ref’s will make mistakes– of that there is no doubt — but it is where there is no accountability, no apology for the occasions when they are wrong, no transparency and no trust that is the issue.
This weekend a newspaper revealed that 80% of Scotland's top flight whistlers failed a competency test on the rules of the game.

Shock report reveals four out of five top refs failed 30-question SFA exam - The Daily Record

And just for balance, another example of Official Incompetence. This is a clip from this weekend's Rangers game.

    BBC Sport - Miller's bizarre throw-in decision

These guys are not only making far more mistakes than it is reasonable to accept, they seem to feel they are impervious to any criticism. They have also been found to be guilty of lying, and stand accused by one of their own of allowing a culture of bullying. It is high time that they were called to account. Let them strike I say, they should be easy enough to replace.

Yes but who would want to referee a scottish game whiich appears to be played by 22 hooligans spurred on by about 50,000 more hooligans.

Maybe the ref changed his mind because he feared for his life and that of his family.

    Just a thought like....

That is an argument of course, but if that were indeed the case, do you imagine he and his family would be more in danger from Dundee United, with an average home gate of maybe 8-10000, or Celtic, with a following many times that?
Doesn't stack up to me. If the safety of his family were at stake, statistically he would have been better sticking with the original decision to award the penalty. After all, the player was not only fouled by the goalie, he was also impeded just before that by the central defender. It would have been a very easy decision to justify.

its a fair point to be honest I was trolling a bit.

There are similar accusations about refs biasedness (sp??) in England - often for or against Man U.

Do the stats back up the claims or is there just an element of emotion which makes decisions seem unfair.

It is always easy to point out 1 or 2 bad decisions each week but is it a trend or does normalisation mean it all evens out eventually?

They should bring refs in from abroad to referee Scottish games for two months, then watch you Old Firm fans start to moan about the number of players you get sent off and the number of penalties given against you.

Celtic maybe feel hard done by every time they get the thick end of crap decisions against the huns, but fans of every other team in the league have to put up with it every time they play either of the bigot brothers.

Bring in foreign refs to the scottish game and wipe out all the baggage of 'what school you went to' that the Scottish game is riddled with.

What it won't eradicate though, is bad refereeing

The fact that almost every game is recorded in one way or another puts every refereeing decision under scrutiny, using technology and time that the ref just doesn't get.

My feeling is that Celtic only want to stamp out poor decisions given against them, but will continue to accept the crap decisions that go their way (Maloney penalty at Fir Park as an example).

When freedom comes along, don't PISH in the water supply.....

What makes it all the more convoluted is that there is an element of both. However over the last couple of seasons it seems to have become more marked. This has coincided with a period whereby the very survival of Rangers as a financial going concern has hinged on them receiving the guaranteed £10M that automatic qualification into the Champions League Group stages has meant. That lifeline has existed only for the SPL Champions so winning the title has been of paramount importance. Both titles have ended up being relatively close affairs. Both have gone the way of Rangers.
Now it might well have been the case that Rangers would have won the titles anyway, but both of those title wins have been strewn with contentious decisions which have, for the most part, tended to favour Rangers. There are entire blogs dedicated to highlighting these discrepancies, and despite challenges for Rangers fans to compile their own list of justifiable grievances, such evidence has failed to materialise.
Be that as it may, the past cannot now be changed, but it is not unreasonable for claims to be made for more transparency and accountability. That will, ultimately, benefit everyone as well as safeguarding Referees if indeed they do feel threatened.

You have a point. I am all for that. But I guarantee you there would be one half of the Old Firm moaning more than the other.

And the third placed team might only end up 20 points adrift at season's end!

What the need to do is amalgamate Rangers and Celtic, Glasgow United, they then move to Premiership and after a few years win the Champions League.

John Reid knew the buttons to push.

Celtic have been going at the SFA for a year now to get something done and in the last few weeks the decisions going against Celtic have been a disgrace.

Hooper got 3 bookings in 2 years at Scunthorpe, he just got 3 in 3 games there.

Celtic are going to win this one.
