for a laptop - Its only lasting around 30mins.

Is there anything I can do with it apart from throwing it in the river or feeding it to kittens?

Nope. Buy another battery from ebay. Or get another lappy.
    Btw, is it a dell?

Depends how old it is. Have you tried running it right down a few times and recharging it?

Get a proper one with CULV - my light laptop lasts 8 hours (As advertised) and it cost 5 times less than the tulip lappy I got 14 years ago...

Try HWmonitor which includes an indication of battery wear.

Sometimes the lost capacity can be recovered by doing a full discharge (WZS).

To do this you will need to run the battery down until Windows shuts the computer down (usually with 3% remaining) and then restart and go into the BIOS setup until the computer turns off. You may well find that the last 3% takes a long time. Emptying the battery enables the battery electronics to recalibrate the empty point.

Then recharge the battery and see if the wear has reduced.
