    Aaargh - Sacrilege!

The chap sitting opposite me has a MacBook Pro and it's emitting Windows style sounds.

He has just proudly informed me that he isn't running Windows via dual boot or in a virtual machine, but he has actually scrubbed all traces of OS X off the machine and it runs only Windows.

    Aaaargh!

    What a waste...
Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.

I put Windows 7 on my wifes I Mac as she needed Office (the mac version wasn't good enough). It's dual boot though.

      Dual boot is acceptable

Didn't know you could do that without a lot of messing about. Seems hardly worth it, though I don't have a problem with the sentiment. Maybe you could have a planB that specialises in selling Windows Macs... there are few Windows machines comparable to the new MacBook Air for instance...

I put OSX on a spare PC and running all the Mac versions of the music software I have. No big deal as far as I can see except I didn't pay three times the price for the hardware no matter how good it looks.

3X is an exaggeration (depending what you could as spec), and if you don't buy based on style you're not Mac target audience anyway.

Is it legal to build a Hackintosh, or have you essentially 'pirated' the OS even though you paid for it?

Also, doesn't music software make the price of a Mac look fairly unimportant, or is that no longer the case?

3x is not an exaggeration for the spec.

I couldn't give a FF whether it's legal or not and I do have a legit OSX license although I doubt that counts.

Pro Tools which is kinda popular on a mac is an expensive but buggy piece of crap if that helps. All the other legit software works equally well on both OSX and Win (and some on Linux).

Depends what you count as spec. A Macbook costs <£900. You don't get much in a laptop for <£300. That's bargain basement and certainly won't include high-quality screen, decent dedicated graphics, etc. Similarly an iMac, 1/3 the price doesn't get you beyond the entry-level spec elsewhere.

I don't really like Macs and argue they are more expensive. But by 10s of percent, at most. Comparing with another solid high-quality PC it's not a big difference. Whenever I see people try to spec up a like-for-like Windows PC to a Mac, like comparing MB Pro against XPS, it doesn't normally prove the point they try to make unless they use some budget brand which ends up with a laptop weighing 7Kg.

edit: The only one I can see you having close to a case is the Mac Pro desktop. I might go down to 1/2 on those, though I don't know the detailed spec.

Get your point, but really comparing OS's is really what I was getting at. When it comes to running apps there's no real difference that I can see.
