The Conservative party today slapped down a senior Tory who said jobless Northerners should take fruit-picking work in the South.
David Shakespeare, leader of Buckinghamshire County Council, said: “The North may replace the Romanians in the cherry orchards.”
Labour branded the comment “offensive” and said David Cameron should make Mr Shakespeare resign. Labour MP Tom Blenkinsop said it undermined Mr Cameron's claim to be a “One Nation” leader by portraying Northerners in a “second class and disrespectful way”.
Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher wrote to the Prime Minister calling the remarks “insensitive and insulting”. He said: “These comments reveal the Tories are the same old nasty party.”
Mr Shakespeare was speaking at a meeting of the Local Government Association where he is leader of the Conservative group, making him one of the party's most senior figures in councils.
A Conservative Party spokesman said: “This is an unacceptable use of language and does not represent the views of the Conservative Party.” However, the party stopped short of disciplining the council leader.

All the guy is really saying is that if there are no jobs in the area where you live you need to get of your ass and find one somewhere else.

I fail to see that there is anything wrong in this statement.

I would imagine Labours main problems is that it means there will be less dole scum to vote for them next time.
