    What gold looks like

    Something like this I reckon:

If you want to see a real gold bar, you can go to the Bank of England museum. You can pick it up etc.

Relax - they only allow small children who are either too young to appreciate value of metal, or too weak to run away with it...

That's just a glass pyramid with a bunch of gold bars inside.

They also have a glass box with a single gold bar inside, you can put your hand in through a hole and pick up the gold bar. The hole isn't big enough to get it out of the box though.

Edit: Apparently it's possible to get a tour of the New York Federal Reserve Bank (in Lower Manhattan), including the gold vaults, but it has to be arranged specially a few weeks in advance. I only realised this when I was actually there, so didn't manage to see it. I did however see the dollar printing presses in Washington.

isn't gold supposed to be quite stretchy? Could you squeeze a bit out?

[ edit: removed duplicate image 'cos Freamon posted it first. ]
