Do you know your Onions ?

In the olden days, when I were a lad, if you knew a lot about a subject, people would say
    'he knows his onions'

and if something was rubbish, it was
    'under the arm'

    a shoddy building was
    'jerry built'

and a very attractive bird was
'Im sure I married a fella'

You mean that in the days before the sexual revolution people didn't check beforehand and didn't know what they were looking for anyway?
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014
