One of the few remaining pillars of the British economy is being dismantled

Pharma was one of the few success stories in the UK. The Pfizer site developed Viagra, Lipitor and a host of blockbuster drugs.
This closure follows similar moves by GSK and AstraZeneca recently.
Its cheaper to do the research out east now.

Interesting - not even very generous patent related taxation that was proposed by the light weight Chancellor stopped them.

        Bad news.

OK, I'm not up to date on the reasons behind this. What could/should the government past and present have done to prevent it?

          Sasguru,

Weren't you the one saying do the work of 10 Bobs or lump it, or accept £10 an hour or lump it, it's globalisation and it's great?

Not so funny now is it?

Let's face it, your Excel skills are easily outsourced to India. They have basic stats knowledge too.

Taxation on profits they make abroad from patents - current Govt offered very generous package (a special tax rate of just 10% for royalties from patents) that was aimed at pharma companies specifically (almost noone else would qualify), yet this is not enough.

He was the one saying couple of years ago that Britain is so good to pharma companies that there is no need for other industries - why bother right?

Please point that post out to me.
I suspect it may be a problem with your poor English comprehension.

They could do similar to what Ted Heath did to save Rolls Royce Aero. Set up a new company with the existing staff.

I think Pfizer will lose out because innovation is not just about using people with the right educational certificates. One just has to look at the qualified Bobs who freeze at the sight of the first problem they have to work out for themselves.
