    Appalachian Trail

I'm all for a bit of cycling, but Lands End to John O'Groats sounds deadly boring. More interesting would be a nice hike in wilderness with fantastic scenery and the odd bit of running away from hungry bears (which is still probably less risky than cycling on British roads). Anyone done or planning to do the Appalachian trail?

Bill Bryson wrote a book on his experience of walking it (well, most of it). I know Bryson isn't to everyone's taste, but I thought it was a bloody good read and well worth getting it if you're thinking of trying it yourself....

I'm quite a fan of Bryson, though haven't read many of his books. I didn't know he'd done the trail and that would be worth a read.

You admitted to drinking your own urine in another thread. You're doing it on your own mate.

No, a couple of idiots said something along those lines, but not me.

If you fancy a bit of a walk, there's no need to go that far afield. You could always try the Camino.

I've read pretty much all of them now and this was one of his best.

The audio versions of Bryson's books are very good!

I've already got the (paid-for) audio CD's of "A short history of nearly everything" and the book. Excellent stuff. I like to go to sleep listening to stuff like that. 'A Walk in the Woods' would be nice to have on the iPod though...

That's my favourite of his books. It's not the funniest but I found it to be the best read.

I think it was in that book I learned about bells and grizzly bears.
