Not really surprising considering that they live on islands.
Islands + Transport + Limited Volumes = Expensive. Technically the fuel is already subsidised as CalMac is not exactly a profitable business without all the grants. So if the tanker company had to pay actual rate to get to the island you'd be looking at a couple more pence.
The local garage down the road from me is on a main road. Always a queue as its at least 2p below anywhere else. The guy shifts around 2 tankers a day in fuel so is happy to make less than a penny a litre on the fuel as it drives people into the shop to buy stuff which is where he makes his money.
