    This Egypt business.....

    Had all this kicked off 20 years ago there'd have been a brief round of shuttle diplomacy and we'd have had our placeman (Mr El Baradei) firmly ensconced in the presidential palace before you could say the Muslim brotherhood.

    No, the US has had their preferred candidate in place the the last 30 years, Mr. Mubarak. It's now a bit awkward for them to come out and criticise him openly.

      Actually the Americans have realised that having their placemen installed causes resentment and revolution and leads to greater problems in the long run.
