    Cars again

Er indoors says my Arfur Daley mobile has got to go. I am having trouble finding anything that suits us both.

Requirements - needs to be able to accomodate two adults and car seat for a three year old (and the three year old).

Should be more use in the conditions if we get any more snow but doesn't need to be 4wd.

    My requirements -
Excellent ride, reasonably brisk, nice to drive. Must have xenon(HID) headlights and heated seats. Proper ipod integration or ability to replace the stereo fairly easily.
    Not a BMW.

    Her requirements -
Auto trans (I can probably get around this), heated seats
Not a Seat, Skoda or Mazda (or probably Toyota or Honda if seh thinks about it)
Better fuel economy than her Disco 3
Not embarrasing for her to turn up at work in
Doesn't have a new random fault every week like my current Jag.
    Less than 4 years old

Budget - to about 19K on a good day.

    Jag X type 4x4.

Why in hells name do you want xenon headlights? Do you enjoy blinding people in front of you or on the opposite carriageway?

      +1 Against Xenon Headlights.

One of my Xenons just stopped working on a 4 year old Alfa Romeo. Bought a new bulb for a DIY job....£120.00 ..... for a bulb! .... and the best part is, it didn't fix it !!

Booked it in to the Alfa specialist and came away £400.00 lighter after it needed some transforming-inducing-resistor-thing to sort it out.

£500.00 against a fiver for a bulb from Halfords.

      Ditch the Xenons

If this is a poll: me too, +1 against.

          +1 on xenons.

Some of the Renault cars are bad for lamp changing, the only access being via the wheel arch.

Seeing as this is a thread about headlights. I worked previously on an hydrogen fuel cell electric car which was built to demonstrate the technology. All the design had gone into the fuel cell bit, but we wondered what was drawing loads of current when the car was stationary sometimes. Turned out that the headlights bulbs were drawing 8 amps when on. Don't know who designed that bit.

On the HID lights - why wouldn't I want to see a bit better - especially in rainy conditions?
If you're being dazzled it's likely by berks who have fitted their own to unsuitable vehicles.

The proper factory ones have to have washers and automatic levelling so they don't dazzle - unlike 90% of halogen lit cars that have that little thumbwheel that their owners ignore.

At least I don't drive round with my bleeding foglights on at all times.

However, it must be observed that changing ordinary headlight bulbs on some of this modern stuff involves taking half the front off the car just to get access.
I have heard that it is a gift from car-makers to their dealers, who get to bill 1/2 hour for changing a bulb.

Volvo c70 are reasonably priced if you fancy a hard top convertible, but only have two doors so not great for putting kids in the back.

Good call - thank you - not really a problem about putting her in the back as she climbs in herself these days.
