View Full Version : Reverse snobbery

suityou01
18th February 2011, 10:36
Has anyone worked their way up in life to get to the standard you are currently at? I mean grew up in a rough area, started work with frak all, and steadily progressed?

One of the things I promised I would never do is lose my sense of where I came from, get all snobby, I hate that. And in point of fact there's nothing too snobby about living in Luton anyway, but we are comfortable, have two modern(ish) cars, a nice house, and can afford a few of life's luxuries.

However along the years I have noticed people I considered friends developing an air of pettiness and jealousy. A kind of reverse snobbery. They're the working class, huddled in whispers and I'm an outsider.

I remember once talking to an IT manager, and we were going to the pub at lunchtime and I invited him along. "I'm more of a winebar person" was the reply. I remember thinking he was pretentious and arrogant. I reckon he was a lad in his day and used to go drinking and fighting with the rest of them but grew out of it.

So anyone else relate to this?

You are now, but some of you must be from more humble beginnings.

I grew up on a fairly rough council estate. I didn't know it was rough when I was a kid - I had a nice childhood as far as I was concerned, just not much money. I earn more now than most of my mates but they don't care and neither do I.

I've noticed it's the new cool thing these days to have had a scummy childhood though.

PS There's nothing cool about coming from a working class background. Most of the working class are thick, alcoholic, impetuous people with criminal tendencies and no sense of deferring gratification.
If you have escaped from such a background I congratulate you.

I went to a boarding school and had a relatively middle class 'posh' upbringing but it has nothing to do with my career or 'where I am now'..

Family didn't have any money so they scrimped and saved to put me through public school - I dropped out at 17 with no A levels, didn't go to uni and bummed around for my early 20's until about age 25 when I got a training course in IT through the job centre.

I whizzed through it so quick they sent me on a 2 week work placement in a large bank (Citi) who then gave me a paid 3 month Summer job. From that I got something else etc etc and now I'm contracting in a top tier IB in Canary Wharf through my LTD.

If I'd have tried to exploit my upbringing at any stage along the way it would probably have been more of a hinderance if anything..

No one likes a posh twat who thinks he's due some special treatment because of the accident of birth. Almost as bad as people with chips on thier shoulders with an axe to grind.

The thing we all have in common is that we've acted on a decision to raise through the ranks. The majority of people from both sides of the fence decide not to do this and just coast through life.

We are all where we are as a result of the choices we've made.
