Monday Links from My Own Kitchen For a Change Vol. LX

Better get this lot posted before my roast lamb is ready:
    • The Recipe for Coca-Cola - is it real? It could well be; the story behind its discovery is in episode 427 of the radio show This American Life.

    • 15 Signs You'll Get Divorced - "Do you have daughters but not sons? How about a kid with ADHD? Did you smile in your yearbook photo? Anneli Rufus on the strange ways science can predict a marriage’s success." Also noteworthy for the innovative application of the words "science" and "predict"... still, maybe there's a kernel of truth in there somewhere.

    • It'll Never Work! - "This started out as a list of negative and pessimistic comments about new ideas, but, to provide some balance, I've begun to add a few overly enthusiastic and optimistic comments." Donald Simanek gathers together some of the more obviously wrong things people have said about science and technology through the ages.

    • The Geek-Kings of Smut - "After once being the best thing that ever happened to porn, the Internet is now wreaking havoc: destroying some fortunes, making bigger ones, and serving as a stimulus plan, in more ways than one." Apparently, free porn is not a viable business model.

    • The CO2inator - Rich Faulhaber, "contributing Evil Mad Scientist," explains how to make fruit fizzy. "With a common house water filter housing, a 16 Oz paintball CO2 canister, an old gas regulator, and some miscellaneous valves and fittings, I was able to bring this fizz fruit apparatus to life, and the kids love the results."

    • Jeff Milner's Backmasking Collection - For years, stoned freaks have been discovering hidden messages when playing their record collections backwards. Jeff Milner has a collection of some of the most well-known snippets both forwards and backwards. Listen to the backwards one a few times before revealing the text of what you're supposed to be able to hear; I'll bet you couldn't hear it

    • My Puny Human Brain: Jeopardy! genius Ken Jennings on what it's like to play against a supercomputer - The game show champion gives his account of last week's contest against IBM's new supercomputer: "Watson has lots in common with a top-ranked human Jeopardy! player: It's very smart, very fast, speaks in an uneven monotone, and has never known the touch of a woman."

    • 365 Yoyo Tricks - Steve Brown is posting an instructional yoyo video every day this year

    • The Moral Crusade Against Foodies - "It has always been crucial to the gourmet’s pleasure that he eat in ways the mainstream cannot afford. For hundreds of years this meant consuming enormous quantities of meat. That of animals that had been whipped to death was more highly valued for centuries, in the belief that pain and trauma enhanced taste... The contemporary gourmet reacts by voicing an ever-stronger preference for free-range meats from small local farms. He even claims to believe that well-treated animals taste better, though his heart isn’t really in it. Steingarten tells of watching four people hold down a struggling, groaning pig for a full 20 minutes as it bled to death for his dinner. He calls the animal 'a filthy beast deserving its fate.'" B. R. Myers is not at all impressed by gourmets.

    • On The Grid - "Dutch photographer Gerco de Ruijter recently got in touch with an extraordinary series of aerial photographs called Baumschule—some of which, he explains, were taken using a camera mounted on a fishing rod. The series features '32 photographs of tree nurseries and grid forests in the Netherlands.'"

    Happy invoicing!

They didn't have anything I really fancied today except a (very nice) spicy tomato soup, so I took a cup of that back to my desk for lunch and cooked a proper meal this evening
