    Alternatives to heating the house

Having just paid a £600 gas bill for the quarter I need to think about some other way of heating the house in winter. Weird and wonderful suggestions welcome.

          Burn a couple of guitars.
          Review your insulation.
Get some cats (they keep your feet warm)
Only heat the rooms you have to

Seriously - wood burning stove for the main living/working area(s)?

Would burning stove would sure help but no chimney here being an old barn. Shouldn't be hard to build a chimney to the outside or some sort of flue. Worth looking into.

              £600?

Spent £200 on 2 tons of hardwood for the burner, the heating only came on in the mornings.

WHS. And if it gets really cold, buy two jumpers. I reckon each layer allows the thermostat to be turned down 3 or 4 degrees.

                Tackle draughts too.

It got so cold here for long periods over the past couple of months that having no heating on would have run the serious risk of burst pipes which would have cost a lot more than the gas bill to fix.

I'm hardy enough and lots of warm clothes but indoors dropping to sub zero temperatures would be torture.
