Motorists will be 'shamed' into slowing down by a new safety system which turns traffic lights red whenever a car breaks the limit - holding everyone else up.

Speeding drivers to be shamed by system that turns traffic lights red if they go too fast... upsetting ALL motorists | Mail Online (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1388711/Speeding-drivers-shamed-turns-traffic-lights-red-fast--upsetting-ALL-motorists.html#ixzz1MoNZJ1VH)

Unless a car or ambulance coming along the intersecting road is going faster.

A few years ago, in a village just outside Doncaster, the police put up a sign saying "695 Speeding Motorists caught in the last twelve months". The locals put up their own sign just below it saying "Zero burglars caught in the last twelve months" and were made to take it down by the police.

The moral of this kind of initiative is clear. Don't speed. Commit proper crimes to avoid detection. :mad

Another prank in the news today:

Speeding kills it should be as socially unacceptable as drink diving.

Maybe they're just try to get out of Swindon real quick.

On what legal grounds, perhaps that it wasn't true (ie some were caught)?

How the **** would I know ?

It was in some Yorkshire paper when I was working there.

Possibly some law connected to members of the public putting up their own road signs ?

You've made that up to try and prove a point. Show us the article or apologise for attempting to mislead the good posters of General.

"The cheeky posters, on laminated yellow backgrounds, were fixed right underneath the official road traffic-style signs so they could not be missed."

Illegal road sign then - perfectly legal to remove it.

I feel I must press you on this. This is quite serious.

A lot of posters on this site take General at face value, recycling facts and titbits on other sites or into conversations.

Imagine how stupid someone like Doogie would look at the weekend, when he's at the big BBQ he's been invited to, worried about what to say to get into the conversation, he looks in his pocket at the notes he's taken over the week from General 'AGW' - nope don't understand it,'Is EternalOptimist really funny' - nope not applicable, I know I'll tell them a story about speeding motorists in Belton, then some fella from Belton goes 'You're talking tulipe', the BBQ is ruined, Doogie looks a twat, his wife leaves him, he finds himself on the bench....

Which THANKS TO EO now! That won't happen and this carefully crafted post I was working on is moot!!!

I can't see the problem with drink diving myself. Sounds like great fun. As long as it's in the deep end and you watch out for swimmers.

If I'd been the police, I'd have put up a third sign saying "Zero toddlers run over by burglars".

It's got to be better than hungover diving. Headaches and increased pressure don't make a happy mix.

Surely collective punishment is illegal under the Geneva Convention. :eyes

Wouldn't that make it illegal for Gordon Brown to be head of the IMF then

I mean, do you think this shame will compare to the shame of living in Swindon?

How about people who have accidently found themselves in Swindon and then in their panic to leave find themselves constantly hitting red lights.

That sounds like the plot of a horror movie. You could have zombies chasing them. Or swindon girls.

Signs need planning permission, and your typical council gets quite uppity about unauthorised ones.

No, inappropriate speed (which may well be under the speed limit) for the road, traffic, conditions, etc. will increase the likelihood of an accident; then when an accident occurs, greater speed will likely increase the damage.

That's significantly different to "speeding kills", but not terribly snappy.
