    Agent asked my NI number

    Hi
I am new to this forum and been doing contract for a while. I had a particular agent asking my NI number details and my Ltd company information. I said i will send it across later in the day. Is it a common practice to ask NI numbers.

No. Never been asked in 20 odd years.

You'd have been f*cked if he required you to complete a written application form, wouldn't you?

Agents do have tricks, but this aint one of them. I can't imagine he's angling for leads here. Probably the reason he wants it is becuase a local government body you'll be working for requires it.
          I'm alright Jack

He probably has a system that needs to assign you with a unique reference number. He doesn't need it for any payroll purpose. Give him a random number in the format AB123456C.

Or he could be checking that you're not an illegal "Bob"...

Agree with Churchill - asking for an NI number is a way to verify that you are not about to take on an illegal or someone with no right to work in the UK; the penalties for getting it wrong are pretty horrific

You could always just ask why he needs it, you shouldn't give this information out to just anyone on account of identity theft risks. Yes, it really happens.

It was only an agent who asked, surely we can trust agents.
