This reincarnation of the C64 comes with a modern set of hardware including a 1.8GHz Intel Atom D525 processor, space for up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM and Nvidia Ion graphics.

All this is packed into a spitting image of the original C64 from the 1980s, including the traditional beige coloured plastic and chunky black keys.

There are an Ethernet port, multiple USB ports, a card reader, WiFi, optional Blu-ray drive and the ability to output full HD 1080p video to a TV or monitor. You can relive 8-bit games and install Windows or an alternative operating system and keep the C64 operating system as well.

I like the look of it. Hopefully the keyboard is a proper one and not a mushy rubber dome job.

Is the C64 OS running under an emulator or does it have an actual 8 bit processor running in there as well?

Commodore USA, LLC, a company licensing the Commodore trademark, planned to release a PC branded C64 in May 2011.[26][27] This "C64x" has a case resembling the original C64 computer, but is based on X86 architecture. The machine is a net-top spec computer which comes with a 1.8Ghz 64-bit dual core D525 Atom processor, Nvidia ION2 onboard graphics, WiFi, Hard Disk and an optional built-in DVD or Blu-ray player. It is planned to ship initially with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition. In addition to this, Commodore USA claims they are also developing their own Linux derivative called Commodore OS, that along with a classic games package, they plan to ship out to early adopters. There will be no hardware compatibility with the original C64, with software compatibility provided through the use of an emulator.
