Have you looked into the possibility of parking near a local station like Belper (to the north) or Long Eaton (south) of Derby? I realise though, there may not be a connection if you're catching a service early in the morning. Trouble with trying to leave a car in a city (apart from the vandals/thieves) is that most streets require permits nowadays (or you're not allowed to park full stop). Instead of forking out for car parking, couldn't you just book a mini-cab from home? It'll still cost you, but at least you can relax.

I've given up on Derby train station, there used to be cheap parking on the Pride Park side but it got expensive and used to close at 10pm.

I take the train from East Midlands Parkway these days.

I never realised I lived so close to you all! Not travelling by train @ present but used to be a regular user or Derby, Long Eaton and Loughborough (before they built EMP).

Cheers. I actually live in one of the northern suburbs of B'gham and currently commute to north east for my contract. The connections from where I live to New Street is not brilliant and hence this idea of driving upto Derby and take the train from Derby to North east.

The parkopaedia website does talk about a secure hotel park but the website crashes once you try to make an enquiry/booking!
