I use Liverpool Victoria for that purpose, pays out after 3 months if something should happen that prevents me from supporting my family.

Not cheap but then neither was it full of small print looking to catch me out, so I reached for my wallet.

Does that cover when you are not working / made redundant from your company?

Only in the event of illness.
