    LA carmageddon

BBC News - Carmageddon: LA braces for traffic gridlock

What caught my eye was this though:

Workers plan to add more lanes to a 10-mile (16km) section of the freeway....Transport officials say the highway is being closed to replace the 50-year-old Mulholland Bridge, as part of a $1bn (£600m) project to add additional lanes to a bottlenecked segment of the highway....Interstate 405, the main artery through the city, will be closed for 53 hours...
In Britain that would be about 10 years. How odd, maybe there is less to this road/bridge work than the article suggests.

Contractors usually travel by helicopter though.

All they're doing is demolishing half of the bridge. Bridge demolition is often done in the course of a weekend on UK motorways too.
