    Side Lines

    Friends,

Do any of you guys have side lines in addition to your "day" job? (legit ones I mean )

I'm a Oracle\Java Developer and once I start working for myself, I would like to maximise my earning potential by having a couple of sidelines, teaching is the first thing that sprung to mind.

Does anyone here teach as a sideline? Do you enjoy it? How did you get started?

    Cheers

I started as a carpenter and joiner so have that to fall back on, can also do plumbing, bricklaying, painting and decorating, and electrics. Also qualified as PI and debt collector which has become more a hobby/job as I only work for those that can't get justice by the normal route and it is enjoyable to beat those who thought they got away with it - quite often for contractors whose agencies don't pay which thankfully has seen a drop in demand. They are there to just fall back on or to just have a change between contracts. I like a bit of variety.

A course on changing idiom perhaps

Alternatively a friend of mine tutored a bunch of course at a local tech. He found it quite rewarding, but not particularly well paid. He just rang them up and said "maybe I can help"

I'd say personally that Oracle\Java Development would be then first thing that sprung to my mind!

I'm a web/asp/.net/sql developer and thats what all my sidelines entail. I just went to vistaprint, ordered a load of company flyers and touted them round local businesses, gives me more sideline work than i can handle. Stick to what you know and it wont do you no wrong.

I train now and again at the moment, just to keep me hand in as it were. (arf)

My theory is that training keeps you sharp in consultancy and consultancy keeps you credible when you train. (In fact this is one thing I check when I spend good money on training. Trainers must have real world experience or you might a well just read the book that they're reading...)

Also, it helps to keep me outside of IR35...

But ASB is absolutely right, FE colleges (or whatever they're called these days) are gagging for experienced technical trainers. Give 'em a call...
