          These quality of life things are meaningless.
          Generally if you're poor you'll be miserable wherever*, if you're rich and lucky enough to have good personal relationships, you'll be happy wherever.*

          *wherever can be qualified as anywhere with a stable political system and no recurrent war.

                Britain also has the smallest average house size in Europe. This might explain that.
