    Apocalypse now

Doomsnight: BBC - BBC Two Programmes - Newsnight

"Meltdown within 2-3 weeks. Sovereign debt meltdown, European bank meltdowns, largest banks in the world meltdown. Will spread everywhere. More serious than 2008. Verge of perfect storm. Could happen at any moment".

Not addressed was whether meltdown would cause a run on supermarkets and make savings worthless.

Think I might stock up on beans while supermarkets and money last.

Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Yes yes yes! But what will it do for house prices?

Is Tesco a luxury brand then?

Tesco profits are down whilst Sainsburys profits are up.

                What's your point?

Food is still remarkably cheap in the UK IMO, and supermarkets doing well (also IMO). People need food in recessions too. Cheaper here than in Europe from my limited experience, especially if you buy 'basics'.

For instance I bought 1kg rice (1160 Calories) for about 40p and 1.5kg flour* (3490 Calories) for 52p the other day. Must be loss leaders surely. That's 4 days Calories for £1. Also Sainsbury are selling packs of 5 Snickers (1300 Calories) for £1. I always snap those up when they appear.

*Anyone know which is best to buy, self-raising or plain, for example, which is more nutritious when eaten raw?
