Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine

Been in this business a long time and it never ceases to amaze me how many problems are caused by poor planning which suddenly becomes an emergency and everyone is expected to jump.

When I was younger, I used to worry about this, but I just dont do it anymore. No more putting employer/client before family.

Had a classic this weekend (involving bobs which made it worse). Apparently, my name had been given as someone to contact and who would be in the office over the weekend. Although, strangely no-one asked me / authorised it so I didnt happen. Bobs werent happy.... (although to be honest for me to miss the rugby would have cost them big time!!!).

Please tell me that somewhere out there theres a company who does things properly. (I think this is just a dream though!)

In the distant past I worked on a couple of projects that "Andersen Consulting" were running.

The development phase of these projects were a dream to work on.

The secret? Andersen were permitted to work for the best part of 18 months on the design and requirements gathering before a single line of code was written.

They brought contractors on board for the implementation and trained up the existing "staff" to handle support after the hand-over.
