    Clement Attlee

Paxman reckons Atlee was "perhaps the greatest Prime Minister of the 20th century". And that includes Thatcher. And he was Labour.

A quick unfinished perusal of his wiki bio says that he was promoted to the rank of Major in the army and was second only to a General to be evacuated from the bit of Gallipoli they were running away from at the time. [A far cry from Blair who strummed his guitar badly as a long haired youth and dropped bombs on people by phone when older]. He then made some far ranging changes to British society.

Although the Attlee Government failed to meet its targets owing to economic constraints, over a million new homes were built between 1945 and 1951 (a significant achievement under the circumstances) which ensured that decent, affordable housing was available to many low-income families for the first time ever.

Perhaps that's what we should be doing now.

Although saying that, great societal changes probably can't be done until society hits rocky bottom. Can't see doctors wanting to work for ordinary wages in a reformed NHS for example, yet.

I've heard others say that. His government introduced a lot of welfare, which was good. Until people started taking the piss.
