Jacques Delors is a master of all the technicalities of the argument, and all the Byzantine structures of the institutions, and speaks confidently in their jargon, but his mind seems burdened by deeper thoughts, too. He sees the crisis of the euro as part of something deeper and wider even than the credit crunch itself. He believes that the main social and economic “players” have their doubts about European policies.

Yet obviously, at the same time, we cannot “tell the President of China what to do. Other peoples want to preserve their values, and we want to preserve ours. This is the great challenge.”
So the crisis of the euro is all part of a crisis of the Western way of doing things? “Oui, c’est ça.”

He's sewing the seeds early that it wasn't his fault, so the angry mob who just lost all their savings and pension will go after somebody else with their burning torches and pitchforks.

He is not wrong - WTO was big mistake, only good for short term corp profits but that stopped working that well: when your own fellow citizens are out of jobs they can't afford to buy expensive goods made in cheap labour countries.

Add unafordable housing and cheap foreign labour distorting the market and we're fecked.

The sad thing is it was obvious this would happen but corps carried on for short term gain.

Maybe, but it's impossible to stop - There are too many channels direct and otherwise for wealth to flow to the Third World.

If a building architect designs something which he knows will fall down if it is built on marshland instead of clay - and then the building contractor says "okay, we're going to build this thing on marshland" - the architect should be shouting his objections from the rooftops.
