    medical check

My client wants to offer a contractor a job but is worried that he may be alcoholic. I have suggested we run a medical check on him first as it is a long term assignment. I am not sure how he is going to react has anyone here been asked to do a medical prior to being offered a contract?
Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyone

Go for it. Maybe even throw in a mental health assessment, you never know. We hired a guy who seemed normal at interview but after a few months completely lost his mind after his wife started shagging a 18 year old guy she met off plentyoffish. We had no end of trouble from him including him alleging that he spotted me standing in front of his house with a gun in my hand.
Last I heard he was admitted to some mental health institute.

Use some bloody sense Dodgy. I do read the site as well you know.

You can tell them to stuff it now.

I'm off to the pub. Hic.

                Take him for a pint.

If he downs a bottle of whisky and ten pints in the time it takes you to drink one, then yes he's an alcoholic.

If of course, he spills most of his first pint down his shirt, takes three sips, says your his bessy mate and then chucks up, then he's Suity.

If your're recruiting for a senior position and if it is a business critical project then I probably would go the medical check route.

I have a mate working as a Programme Director and he's been asked occasionally, he doesn't have a problem with it (but then his health isn't a 'sensitive' issue for him...)

You need specialist HR advice as depending on how you phrase it & if he has any other medical issues (that may not affect his work) he could claim disability discrimination: it’s unlikely just one to watch for.
