    Is your rate "competitive"?

Agent just rang me about something that I have very little in doing.

I quoted a rate to price myself out of it, and she said "is that your most competitive rate for the Nottingham area?"

    WTF?!?!?

I don't need to be competitive on rate - unless you see contractors as widgets that you can just swap one for another.

So - do you adjust your rate to be "competitive" or charge a premium because your excellence speaks for itself?

I usually ask for more for each contract.

The more they pay you, the more they listen.
    Fiscal nomad it's legal.

What fairyland do you live in where vendors in a crowded market don't have to be competitive on price?

FFS woman, what you mean is 'can't you do it any cheaper than that?'

I hate this talk of 'most competitive rate' and so on. Speak English, stupid bint.

And no, I am not cheap. If you want cheap, go ahead, we'll speak again in a few months time when someone else has made a mess of it.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

Depends. The market I work in at the moment is very tough, so I have to be competitive. The worst insult was when I was told the other day that I am 'excellent value'. R

Almost - the answer to that would be "yes, but I'm not going to". Of course, I can do it cheaper, but why bother?

I like to think of myself somewhere between Alpen and Stella Artois.

How the client views me is another matter.

I am in a contract so I think I must be competitive, whether or not that is a good thing or a bad thing is another question!

I pretty much agreed what I would call the standard rate for my profession as a tester as it was my first contract. But when this one is up my rate will be going up, also I would tend to base my rate on where in the country the role was as some parts are very expensive to stay in.
