    Question for socialists

    If it is right everyone should get free medical care, regardless of wealth, and everyone's children should be given free education, why should we have to pay for housing? Surely shelter (a home) is a right and the government should provide completely free housing to every single person in the country?

    So the question is, if we must pay for our own shelter, why should education and healthcare be free?

    I thought having your mortgage paid off by the tax payer was the Tory master plan?

      Correct. If there had ever been a Socialist government, this would have been the case.

      Your question is invalid due to your incorrect assumption.

        And while I'm at it, food is required by every single person to stay alive, it's a human right, so why isn't all food provided FOC by the government? Otherwise the poor get crap food and the rich get nice food, which can't be right surely?

        When you start thinking about it, the whole free healthcare thing makes no sense.

          As Nick says, in a socialist regime those things probably should all happen.

          But welfare state != socialism.

            But is everyone equal. That's the question?
            What happens in General, stays in General.
            You know what they say about assumptions!

              There's nothing about Socialism that says everybody must have the same, just that nobody should be in want.

              So if the State provides food of a mediocre quality there's nothing to stop those who can afford it buying food of what they perceive to be a higher quality for themselves. In the same way, those who don't want to live in State housing can, if they can afford it, buy a better home for themselves.

              I know you lot are pig ignorant when it comes to Socialism, but you should realise that this disqualifies you from discussing it. Go away and learn something, then come back when you are intellectually equipped to engage in meaningful dialogue (if you ever manage to achieve such a state).

                The wrong question, to be precise.

                  Just removed all the unnecessary verbiage for you there.
                  And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014
